A biosafety cabinet (BSC) — also called biological safety cabinet or microbiological safety cabinet — is an enclosed, ventilated laboratory workspace for safely working with materials contaminated with (or potentially contaminated with) pathogens requiring a defined biosafety level. The primary purpose of a BSC is to serve as the primary means to protect the laboratory worker and the surrounding environment from pathogens. Biosafety cabinets are used on a daily basis for hours. Besides protection of user and sample material, the ergomical aspects of the work become more and more important. EN 14470-1 DEMAND This European Standard describes the design and testing criteria for safety storage cabinets to be used in laboratories to store flammable liquids in locked containers at normal room temperatures. Primarily, this European Standard covers the three major safety requirements for storage of flammable liquids, which are: a) minimising the fire risks associated with the storage of flammable substances and protection of the cabinet’s contents in the event of fire for a known (tested) minimum length of time (fire rating); b) minimising the amount of vapour released into working environment; c) retention of accidental spillage within the cabinet. Testing the cabinet under fire conditions is normative. The fire test is utilized for four categories of fire protection/ratings. In practice the degree of fire protection/rating allows the user to select, depending on individual circumstances, a safety storage cabinet which will allow sufficient time for personnel to leave, and fire fighters to enter the laboratory before the flammables stored may turn from a possible minor/extinguishable fire into an uncontrollable one. A fume hood is a piece of laboratory equipment that is used to protect scientists from the possible negative effects of an experiment. This is primarily done by keeping the air inside the fume hood away from the people doing the experiment. Fume hoods also offer other features and protections that are useful in a laboratory setting. Fume hoods have distinct physical characteristics. The base of the fume hood usually looks like a typical lab bench, and may have storage built into it, above the floor. On top of and connected to the bench is a very large enclosure called a cabinet. The cabinet will have a movable door, or sash, on the front that can be raised or lowered to provide access to the worktop portion of the fume hood. Openings around the edges of the worktop and/or at the top of the cabinet allow for the removal of gases in the cabinet. Experiments are performed inside the cabinet with the sash as low as possible so as to protect the experimenters. Fume hoods provide protection from more than just dangerous gases. The enclosed nature of the cabinet helps to protect experimenters from being hurt by debris if something explodes or splashes. Fume hoods are also usually made of flame-retardant materials, so unexpected fires tend not to be as damaging as they would be in an open area.
